SYMPTOMS NOT CHECKED

Rated 1 out of 5
October 22, 2024

We are constantly seeing on the television and hearing on the radio “together we’re beating cancer” . . “early detection is vital” . . “see you’re GP” etc, etc.

My dearest friend who was in her 70s and had lived in Ballybay all her life made an appointment to see a doctor at Ballybay Health Care Unit with the following symptoms: A persistent cough, Hoarseness, and Ear pain which are the classic symptoms of laryngeal cancer. . The doctor wasn’t particularly interested in the symptoms and prescribed an inhaler. . The condition didn’t improve so my friend made a number of visits back to the doctor. . and it actually reached a point where my friend actually cried as she told me how the doctor smirked at her and said there was nothing wrong with her. . my friend told me the doctor made her feel like she was a burden. . .

My dearest friend is now dead . . It took 9 months, before by accident at a hospital appointment to have her ear looked at, that the hospital doctor checked her throat. . . Cancer is a time sensitive condition, and the cancer had been growing bigger and bigger over the 9 months that she had been left undiagnosed by the GP in Ballybay, because the GP hadn’t even bothered to check the symptoms. . .

My dear friend suffered terribly, 35 sessions of radiation on her throat, she couldn’t talk for a long time, she couldn’t eat and never did eat again, and had to have a PEG feed fitted which made her constantly sick, ill, and in pain. .

All of this could have been avoided if the GP had checked the symptoms. If you contact a plumber because you have a problem with your water system he will ask “what are the symptoms” . . if your car isn’t running properly the mechanic will ask “what are the symptoms” . .

Jamie Theakston in the UK recently visited his GP because he had exactly the same symptoms as my friend, a persistent cough, hoarseness, and ear pain. His GP checked the symptoms and Jamie was diagnosed with stage1 laryngeal cancer. The difference that makes the difference is that because the GP checked the presenting symptoms, Jamie’s cancer is very treatable and he is more than likely going to make a full recovery, whereas my dearest friend is now dead. .

A life has been lost unnecessarily, her family are grieving the loss of their loved one. and I’m heartbroken at the loss of my dearest precious friend. .

My friend would want me to write this honest review, and so I’m doing it in memory of her, and also in the hope that it gets the appropriate attention to facilitate change at Ballybay Health Care Unit – General Practice so that it doesn’t happen to anyone else. .
